PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Information Department (JaPen) has announced revisions to the validity periods of the Media Certification Card (KPM), affecting various categories of media practitioners.
Effective immediately, official government media practitioners and local media, including online media, will now enjoy an extended validity period of two (2) years, as stated in Thursday’s (Mar 7) press release.
Similarly, Malaysian citizens working as international media practitioners will also benefit from the revised validity period, now set at two (2) years compared to the previous one (1) year.
“Media practitioners with annual contracts, such as freelance staff like stringers, will undergo a one (1) year validation period. This change also applies to international media practitioners who are non-Malaysian citizens and on long-term visits.
“Newly registered online media practitioners with JaPen will face a six (6) month validation period. This adjustment aims to ensure the active and legitimate operation of online media platforms, with a focus on mitigating the spread of false information.”
JaPen emphasises that these changes are immediately enforced as of March 7, 2024. Holders of JaPen’s KPM with active validity periods are encouraged to apply for renewal after the expiration of their respective periods.
Additionally, all applications for the registration of new media agencies and other KPM-related requests must adhere to the newly established validity periods.
Stakeholders are reminded to consult the guidelines available through the Frequently Asked Questions link on the official JaPen website (https://emedia.penerangan.gov.my/) for further clarity on these updates.
