KUCHING: All Malaysians who are currently residing in New Zealand have been told to report themselves to the Malaysian High Commission should there be an emergency which requires governmental assistance.
Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) for Health, Science and Innovation Chairman Dr Kelvin Yii said there are an estimated 17,000 Malaysians in New Zealand; however, some chose not to register themselves with the High Commission.
“When they (High Commission) received requests from parents to help evacuate their children who are mainly students and they have to go through all the necessary procedures. Thus, it is important for all Malaysians to report themselves to the High Commission.
“At the same time, this allows them to ensure the welfare and situation of those are in New Zealand,” he said in his Facebook post after paying a courtesy call to the Malaysian High Commissioner Nur Izzah Wong Mee Choo in Wellington, today (Sept 20).
Yii and Izzah also discussed several issues faced by the Malaysian community and the role of the High Commission, including all the efforts done to help the community, especially during Covid-19 where they were in lockdown
“On top of that, she shared their experience in helping the Malaysians that were affected by the country’s shootings a few years ago,” he said.
Yii, who is also Bandar Kuching Member of Parliament (MP) is currently on a working visit to exchange knowledge about COVID-19 management and tobacco control between the two countries.
The delegation is scheduled to meet New Zealand’s Minister of Health and the Minister of Science and Innovation as well as the respective chairman for each Select Committee.
