KUALA LUMPUR: The demand for Mokara orchid and its high sales value in Dubai, United Arab Emirates opens up new market opportunities for the country’s orchid industry as the city is one of the world’s leading tourism and financial destinations.

The Agriculture Department said that Mokara orchids produced in Malaysia are among the flower species mainly exported to Singapore, with an annual average value of RM11.62 million from 2016 to 2020.

“Besides Singapore, Dubai is also a popular export destination for native orchids as the conditions for export to the city are easier in terms of phytosanitary requirements set by the country,” the department said in a statement today.

The floriculture industry earned RM417.3 million from exports in 2021. The trade value has increased significantly to RM403 million compared to 2020.

“The Agriculture Department will always assist the floriculture industry players, especially in exporting and developing overseas markets,” said the statement. – BERNAMA
