KUCHING: A male student died while four others were severely injured in a car crash at Jalan Datuk Bandar Mustapa early this morning.
Sarawak Traffic Police chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu, who confirmed the case, said the victim identified as Rachel Peter, 17, was confirmed dead in the accident believed to have occurred around 5 am.
Investigations at the scene found that the accident happened as the car was moving towards the Jalan Stephen Yong traffic lights from the BDC roundabout. It was believed to have swerved to the left lane and crashed into a drain.
“The male student, who was the driver, was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was taken to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) forensic unit for post-mortem.
“Meanwhile, four other passengers – two men and two women – were rushed to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for immediate treatment.
“All of them aged between 17 and 20 with injuries to their heads, hands, backs and chests, were reported to be in stable condition,” he said.
The vehicle was found to be registered under the name of the victim’s mother.
Alexson added that preliminary investigations found the cause of the accident was from alleged negligence and speeding.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
