KUCHING: This year, AEON Mall Kuching has embraced the theme “Pragmatic Deepavali,” emphasising the festival’s message of renewal and self-improvement.
Deepavali is a time for strengthening relationships, showing generosity, and embracing positivity.
The festival’s core principles of light overcoming darkness, renewal, and communal harmony resonate deeply, encouraging everyone to incorporate these values into their daily lives.
According to senior marketing cum designer, Mohd Azlan Zainal Abidin, 35, the centerpiece of the mall’s celebration is a stunning kolam rangoli design, featuring a vibrant peacock as its focal point.
The peacock, adorned with a striking blue body and bright orange accents, displays its iconic multicolored feathers in a gradient of green, blue, yellow, and orange. This majestic bird symbolises beauty and grace, making it a popular motif in traditional Indian rangoli for festive occasions.Surro
unding the AEON Mall Kuching Central logo is a large, symmetrical lotus flower pattern, characterised by multicoloured petals that echo the hues of the peacock’s tail.
In Indian culture, the lotus represents purity and prosperity, aligning perfectly with the Deepavali theme.
Additionally, a small traditional oil lamp (diya) near the peacock’s head signifies the victory of light over darkness—a key tradition during the festival.
Prominently displayed at the top of the design is the message “Happy Deepavali,” set within an orange cloud-like banner outlined in yellow, adding a warm, festive touch.
The AEON Mall Kuching Central logo is centrally positioned within the lotus flower motif, linking the celebration directly to the mall.
The colourful design utilises bright and contrasting colours, typical of Indian festivals, including deep blues, oranges, and greens, creating a lively atmosphere. By blending modern branding with traditional elements, this kolam beautifully captures the essence of Deepavali.
Creating this vibrant artwork took nearly a week, involving two days for design selection and creation, followed by a day dedicated to colouring. Remarkably, the mall used 35 kg of discarded rice from Liansin, demonstrating a commitment to reducing food waste and promoting sustainability through reusable art.
After three days of drying, the coloured rice was meticulously placed between 2 pm to 9 pm on October 15.
AEON Mall Kuching’s celebration of Deepavali through this stunning kolam not only showcases creativity but also highlights the importance of tradition and sustainability in festive celebrations.
Deepavali, also known as Diwali, falls on October 31 this year.
