KUCHING: It was full-house at last Tuesday night’s “Mamma Mia” the musical staged at Dewan Suarah Kuching where the crowd cheered and shouted in appreciation and excitement.
The event from 8.40pm to 10.30pm featured talented youths who performed several hits of ABBA with Simfoni Orkestra Negeri Sarawak (SONS) choir.
A member of the audience, Amr Magdy, 26, a student from Egypt told reporters that it was his first time attending a musical play in Sarawak.
“The show was very colourful and the people were very energetic. We do have musical plays in Egypt but they are usually traditional such as the Arabian Nights or, as you may put it, like P. Ramlee here,” he said.
A drama club student, Ivonne Sim, 26, said, “The songs are very catchy. It’s ABBA … and for these sorts of performances the singer needs to be energetic.
“The singer in the play was powerful. She really touched the audience. If I could rate the performances, I would give them 10 out of 10.”
Acting as Sophie (the lead character) in the musical, Claudia Mas Peter Karawang, 25, said she joined the play last year performing at Kingwood Hotel, Sibu.
“The crowd was wild, and based on tonight’s response, the local crowd was even wilder — cheering and screaming — giving me goosebumps,” she said.
The lead male past, Sky, was played Adriann Ericson Jackson, 25, from Sabah. He said his passion was performing on stage, so when he joined the Mamma Mia musical, he finally accomplished his dream.
“I found this play through Claudia. She said there was an empty spot so I applied to get in. My advice to those who are interested in the performing arts is don’t be afraid to show off your talents. You have a dream, you pursue it,” he said.
