KUCHING: Traffic police here arrested a local man for driving under the influence of alcohol in an operation dubbed ‘Op Mabuk’ last night (Oct 30).
The operation carried out by 11 personnel from the Traffic Police Division took place at Jalan Simpang Tiga from 11pm until 2am.
Kuching OCPD ACP Ahsmon Bajah confirmed that the team detained a 29-year-old man on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
“A breath analyser test was conducted and the man will be investigated under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
“If convicted, the suspect can be fined up to RM30,000 or be sentenced to jail for a term up to two years and have his driving licence disqualified for two years,” he said.
During the operation, the team also issued 22 summonses for various traffic offences after inspecting 33 people in 83 vehicles.
Ahsmon assured that the police will continue and enhance ‘Op Mabuk’ to detect and take action against alcohol influenced drivers as such an act is dangerous to other road users.
