SIBU: A man was arrested for trying to bribe a raiding team from the General Operations Force (GOF) with RM15,000 so action would not be taken against him for alleged possession of contraband cigarettes.
According to 10th Battalion GOF commander, Supt Sanudin Mohamad Isa, the team and three Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) personnel raided a house at Taman Mayfair in Sri Aman at 9.30am on Friday.
There, they met a man in his 50s. When they checked the house, they found 726 cartons of smuggled cigarettes worth RM132,660 including tax in a store room.
“The team informed him that it is an offence to possess contrabands,” he added.
The suspect tried to negotiate with the team to let him go free.
The suspect was immediately arrested when he offered them RM15,000 as a bribe so that they would not detain him.
“The money and a van were seized from him,” said Sanudin.
The case is being investigated under the Customs Act 1967 and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act.
