SIBU: A 83-year-old man claimed trial in the High Court here yesterday to a charge of trafficking in dangerous drug of cannabis.

When the nature of charge was read and explained to Tiong Soon Hieng, he understood and the consequences of entering his plea of not guilty.

According to the charge sheet, he was accused of trafficking in dangerous drug, to wit, 5081.06 grams of cannabis, in front of Kim Hua Cafe at Jalan Dermaga, Bintangor, at 10.05 am on January 6 this year.

The offence is listed under Section 39B (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under subsection 39B(2) of the same Act.

The Act reads, “Any person who contravenes any of the provisions of subsection (1) shall be guilty of an offence against this Act and shall be punished on conviction with death or imprisonment for life and shall, if he is not sentenced to death, be punished with whipping of not less than 15 strokes.”

The case was prosecuted by deputy Public Prosecutor Tengku Najiha while Tiong was represented by legal counsel Francis Wee.

High Court Judge Wong Siong Tung scheduled the case for next mention on May 16.
