MIRI: A 12.5-foot-long crocodile was successfully captured on Thursday (Sept 26), following a fatal attack in the area.
The crocodile, identified as a Crocodylus porosus, was caught during a joint operation by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) and the police.
The operation, which began on Wednesday (Sept 25), involved the SFC’s Wildlife Rapid Action Force (SWAT) team and was focused on the vicinity of Ladang Batu 4, Kuala Baram.
The crocodile was lured and trapped using fishing baits that had been set up at the site, a known location for recent sightings.
“Several objects and debris were found in the crocodile’s stomach, which has been handed over to the police for further investigation,” said SFC in a statement.
The specific nature of these items has not yet been disclosed.
The operation was launched in response to a tragic incident on Sept 25, when a 59-year-old man was killed by a crocodile while checking his fishing nets near Batu 4, Kuala Baram.
His body was later recovered from the river.
SFC has urged the public to exercise caution in areas known for crocodile activity and to avoid approaching riverbanks without taking necessary precautions.
The operation will continue until Oct 5, with additional traps being set up to ensure the safety of the local community.
