Man fined RM1,000 for unlicensed lottery ticket purchase

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here sentenced a local man to a fine of RM1,000 in default three weeks in prison for purchasing unlicensed public lottery tickets last week.

Wong, 35, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali to a charge framed under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

If convicted, he can be fined up to RM5,000 or sentenced to prison for a term of up to six months or both.

Wong committed the offence at an eatery along Jalan Pending around 12.40 pm on Jan 13.

According to the facts of the case, a police team raided an eatery and arrested the offender on suspicion of being involved in buying illegal lottery tickets.

Wong’s belongings including a mobile phone and RM22 in cash, were also confiscated.

Investigation found that he had been involved in the purchase of illegal lottery tickets and the seized items were confirmed to be used in gambling activities.

Insp Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang prosecuted the case while Wong was unrepresented by a counsel.
