KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here fined a local man RM3,000 in default three months in prison for reselling a stolen Samsung smartphone for RM100 on Facebook.

Ariffuddin Sabri, 44, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi to a charge framed under Section 414 of the Penal Code, which carries a prison term of up to seven years or a fine or both.

He had disposed of a stolen Samsung Note 20 smartphone by reselling the phone to another person at a house in Timberland Park, between 10.30 am and 11 am on Dec 27.

According to the facts of the case, a woman reported her smartphone missing during a house burglary on Dec 23.

She lodged a police report for further action and it led to the arrest of a man named Darwis for having the woman’s smartphone.

Nevertheless, Darwis informed the police that he bought the phone for RM100 from Ariffuddin through Facebook.

The police then arrested Ariffuddin at a hospital ground at around 2 pm on Dec 27.

Investigations found that he had disposed of the stolen property by selling a smartphone belonging to a woman for RM100.

Insp Ammarsoffi Yusoff prosecuted the case while Ariffuddin was unrepresented by a counsel.
