KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court today fined a man RM4,300 fine for possessing 0.29 grammes of methamphetamine.
Kamarulzzaman Ismail, 31, pleaded guilty to the charge read by an interpreter before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi.
He was charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 having in possession a prohibited substance on Jalan Pending at about 11.45 am on March 29.
The offender can be fined not more than RM100,000 or serve a prison sentence of not more than five years.
Zubaidah ordered Kamarulzzaman to serve a prison term of seven months if he fails to pay the fine.
The court was told that police arrested Kamarulzzaman at Jalan Pending and found 14 pieces of straw-like packets containing crystal substances suspected to be methamphetamine weighing one gramme in a cigarette box held by the accused.
The seized items were then sent to the Malaysian Chemistry Department which confirmed that the packets contained methamphetamine.
Inspector Nur Syafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted while the accused was not represented.
