Man fined RM4,900 for drug possession

KUCHING: A local man who pleaded guilty to drug possession, was on Friday (Oct 16) fined RM4,900 or six months’ jail.

Magistrate Zaiton Anuar ordered the 23-year-old man to be fined after pleading guilty to an offence under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The man admitted to possessing 6.55g of methamphetamine at 5.20pm in front of a house at Jalan Quop, Mile 10, Jalan Kuching-Serian here on Aug 5.

The accused was arrested by a team of policemen deployed to the scene after receiving a report on drug abuse activity in the area.

Upon arrival, the team arrested the man and conducted an inspection onto a handbag held by the man. It was found to contain five small plastic packets suspected to be crystalline substances.

The crystalline substance was sent to the Chemistry Department to identify the material and on Sept 15, the department found that the substance was 3.60g of methamphetamine.

Meanwhile in a separate case, a local man who pleaded guilty to committing the same offence was fined RM3,000 or five months’ imprisonment.

The 27-year-old accused from Taman Borneo, Jalan Lapangan Terbang Baru pleaded guilty to committing an offence under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The accused admitted to possessing ketamine weighing 0.50g at 12.30am in a room at a house in Taman Borneo on Aug 6.
