KUCHING: A man was sentenced to six years in prison and three strokes the Sessions Court here today (Mar 22) for committing armed robbery against a female receptionist at a budget hotel two years ago.

Khairul, 37, pleaded guilty to one charge read by the interpreter before Judge Saiful Bahari Adzmi.

According to the charge, he and an accomplice, who is still at large, were accused of committing group robbery using a sword against a 22-year-old female receptionist.

They robbed a sum of RM394 in cash belonging to a budget hotel and a smartphone belonging to the victim.

The defendant and his accomplice committed the act at a budget hotel in Kenyalang Park, Jalan Tun Razak, around 2.23 am on November 21, 2022.

Therefore, they were charged under Section 397 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 34 of the same code.

Based on the facts of the case, during the incident, the victim, who was working, was approached by two men who demanded she hand over a sum of money.

They also threatened to harm the victim if she refused to hand over the money while one of them brandished a sword.

Out of fear, the victim handed over cash amounting to RM394 and a Samsung smartphone.

The defendant and his accomplice then fled. The estimated loss was around RM794.

A police report was filed by the victim, leading to the arrest of the defendant on November 26, 2022, around 11.30 pm in Kampung Sungai Maong.

Investigation findings revealed that the defendant, along with an accomplice, had committed armed robbery using a sword.

Furthermore, the victim’s positive identification of the defendant committing the offense was based on Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage.

The prosecution of the case was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohammad Fauzan Zamri, while the defendant was represented by lawyer Abdul Rahman Mohamad Hazmi.
