KUCHING: The Magistrates’ Court here handed down a two-year prison sentence to a man for deliberately hitting a police constable with a motorcycle two years ago.

Iqmal Zachary Kamal, 31, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi to charges under Section 353 and Section 186 of the Penal Code.

The first charge pertained to using criminal violence against a police constable in the line of duty, while the second charge was for obstructing the same person from performing his duties.

Magistrate Zubaidah imposed a two-year prison term for each charge, to be served concurrently.

The offence occurred along Jalan Bintawa at approximately 2.45pm on Jan 29, 2022.

According to case details, a police team attempted to apprehend Iqmal, who was riding a motorcycle, following information about drug distribution and abuse activities in the area.

Upon noticing the police presence, Iqmal attempted to flee and collided with the victim, causing injuries to the constable’s left leg and knee.

The injured policeman was subsequently transported to the hospital for further treatment, while Iqmal was arrested by other police personnel at the scene.
