MIRI: A 25-year-old man was arrested on Oct 8 for allegedly raping and impregnate his underaged girlfriend, who is now in her eighth month of pregnancy.
Miri police chief ACP Hakemal Hawari said the suspect was picked up at a longhouse in Ulu Niah by a team from the Miri Criminal Investigation Department around 9pm on that day following a lodged report.
The incident came to light after the girl, a Form Three student, 15, accompanied by her mother, went to a maternity health clinic in Batu Niah for an examination on Sept 9 and found out that she was 33 weeks’ pregnant.
The police were informed on the incident by a medical practitioner of the clinic when the girl’s mother did not file a report after she was advised to do so.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the girl had befriended the suspect early this year, and broke up in April after involving in a physical relationship with him,” said Hakemal.
The suspect is under police custody to facilitate investigation. The case is being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape.
