MIRI: Police have arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly molesting a six-year old girl at the waterfront here.
The suspect was detained by a team from the Miri Criminal Investigation Department (CID) around 2.50 am on Saturday at a five-foot-way of Old Man Street here.
According to Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, the man was arrested after police received a report lodged by the girl’s mother who said her six-year-old daughter had been molested by an unknown man near the Miri River mouth.
The incident reportedly occurred around 9pm last Friday during a fishing trip near the river mouth area.
While her parents and two other siblings were fishing, the child had wandered off to a nearby area.
The 41-year-old mother only realised her child’s disappearance after hearing a loud scream from the nearby area.
Worried that an awful thing might have happened to the girl, the family members rushed to the location and found the girl being hugged by an unknown man.
A police report was subsequently lodged by the mother.
The suspect is currently being detained at Miri Central Police station lockup for questioning.
The case is being investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code for outraging modesty of a person.
