Man jailed 12 months over drug abuse

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here sentenced a local man to 12 months in prison for abusing amphetamine and methamphetamine.

Muhammad Ryann Hidayat Abdullah, 24, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Alwi to a charge under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 15(1) of the same Act.

If convicted, he could face up to two years’ imprisonment or a fine of up to RM5,000, in addition to being placed under police supervision for up to three years.

The court also ordered Ryann to be placed under police supervision for two years following the completion of his prison sentence.

The offence occurred while he was detained at the Kuching Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) around 1 am on Oct 4.

According to case facts, a urine screening test conducted on Ryann returned positive for drugs.

The urine sample was subsequently sent to the Sarawak General Hospital’s Pathology Department, where the report confirmed the presence of amphetamine and methamphetamine.

ASP Arman Ibrahim prosecuted the case, while Ryann was unrepresented by counsel.
