Man jailed 16 years for two separate cases

KUCHING: A local man was sentenced to seven years in prison and two strokes of the whip by the Sessions Court here for committing a gang robbery.

Judge Mohd Taufik Mohd@Mohd Yusoff sentenced Addian, 27, after he pleaded guilty under Section 395 of the Penal Code and read along with Section 397 of the same Code, during the case hearing on Thursday.

According to the charges, he and a friend of his are accused of robbing a grocery store at Jalan Stutong of RM1,300 while being armed with knife at about 6.35am on November 9, 2021.

According to the facts of the case, when the victim was working at the grocery store, two unknown men suddenly came and pointed a knife at the victim.

The two men then took the cash amounting to RM1,300 from the cash machine and fled.

The victim then made a police report after the incident happened which led to the arrest of the accused on December 3, 2021.

Earlier, in a separate case, he was also sentenced to nine years in prison by Sessions Court Judge Maris Agan under the same section.

The accused requested that the sentence imposed on him run concurrently for both charges.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Danial Mohammad Ali requested that the accused serve consecutive prison terms because it is necessary to take into account the seriousness of the offence, the time and the location of the robbery.

The court then decided that the accused should serve consecutive sentences for both charges.
