Man jailed 2 years, six months for drug possession and abuse

KUCHING: A man has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison after pleading guilty to charges of possessing 9.28g of methamphetamine and engaging in drug abuse activities last year.
Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan delivered the verdict, and the accused faced three charges under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Mike Easter Louis, 32, was charged with two counts of possessing methamphetamine, weighing 0.11g in a car and 9.17g hidden between a banana tree, offenses under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act.

The incidents occurred at different locations in Jalan Kapor and Lorong Kepayang around 12.10am on Aug 31, 2023.

For the first charge, the accused received a six-month prison sentence, and for the second charge, he was sentenced to two years in prison, with both sentences to be served concurrently.

Additionally, he faced a third charge under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for testing positive for drug abuse, an offense punishable under Section 15(1) of the same Act.

This charge resulted from a urine test conducted at the Kuching Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (NCID) office around 1.15am on the same day. The accused received a six-month prison sentence for this charge and was ordered to undergo police supervision for two years following his release.
The case details revealed that police officers arrested Mike in a car on suspicion of his involvement in drug activities.

A subsequent search uncovered a plastic packet containing a crystalline substance believed to be methamphetamine under the driver’s seat.

He then led the police to Lorong Kepayang, where another plastic packet of drugs was discovered hidden between a banana tree.

Laboratory reports confirmed the substances as methamphetamine, weighing 0.11g and 9.17g, respectively.
Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang prosecuted the case, while the accused was unrepresented by legal counsel.
