SIBU: A 52-year-old man was sentenced to six months in prison today (Sept 13) for stealing a bag containing various items, including a smartphone and laptop.

Magistrate Oon Kork Chern convicted Azid Lau, 52, from Jalan Ban Hock, Kuching, after he pleaded guilty to the theft charge, under Section 379 of the Penal Code.

Lau had stolen a black bag, a wallet, a BMW car key, an autogate house fence key, a black sweater, a Macbook laptop, and an Apple brand smartphone model iPhone 12 from Rachel Valentine Kong.

The theft occurred at the bus stop stand on Kpg Datu Road on Sept 7 at approximately 11 am.

Prosecuting officer ASP Siti Mariyah Dahari told the court that on Sept 8, the complainant (the victim’s mother) reported her daughter’s bag missing.

Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Lau at a house in Kampung Datu and recovered the stolen items.

Lau led police to different places to retrieve other stolen items that he had disposed of.
