Man jailed three months and fined for drug abuse, meth possession

KUCHING: A local man was fined RM3,400 and jailed for three months by the Magistrate’s Court here, today, for being involved in drug abuse activities and possessing 1.16 grams of methamphetamine last April.

The accused Razak, 36, pleaded guilty to two charges which were read by an interpreter in front of Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi.

Based on the charge sheet, he was charged with possession of 1.16 grams of Methamphetamine at a house at Kampung Gita Laut, around 11.30am, on April 18.

Prosecution of the case under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and read together with Section 12 (3) of the same act carries a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment not exceeding five years or both, if convicted.

Zubaidah imposed a fine of RM3,400 or four months in prison if the accused failed to pay the fine.

In addition to that, the accused is also charged under Section 15 (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and can be punished under Section 15 (1) of the same act, for being involved in drug abuse activities.

Conviction is punishable by a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment not exceeding two years.

For the offence, the court sentenced the accused to three months in prison and under police supervision for two years after serving the prison sentence.

The prosecution of the case was handled by Prosecuting Officer Inspector Nur Syafiqa Nyaie Ilin while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
