SIMUNJAN: A man was killed while another was injured in a three-vehicle accident at Jalan Serian-Sri Aman last Saturday (Oct 30).
The accident near Kampung Sungai Pinang happened at 5.15pm and involved a lorry, travelling from Miri to Kuching, and two vehicles — a Toyota Yaris and a Toyota Hilux, travelling from Serian to Sri Aman.
Investigations found that the 44-year-old lorry driver was attempting to overtake another vehicle in front of him prior to the crash.
However, he lost control of his vehicle and skidded into the opposite lane before colliding head-on with the Toyota Yaris, driven by the victim, 29, with his 31-year-old wife and six-month-old child as passengers.
Sarawak Traffic Police chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu, who confirmed the case, said the lorry also crashed into the Toyota Hilux, driven by a 54-year-old man, which was behind the Toyota Yaris.
“Due to the impact, the victim (Toyota Yaris driver), identified as Tay Guan Teck, was trapped in his seat and suffered severe head and body injuries.
“Firefighters managed to extricate the trapped victim. He was later pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics,” he said, adding that the victim’s body was taken to the hospital for further action.
Meanwhile, the lorry driver suffered a fractured right calf and right foot.
Alexson added that Tay’s wife and child together with the Toyota Hilux driver managed to escape unharmed.
The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
