BAU: An eight-day search to locate a man who went missing after a fishing trip on Feb 3 at Sungai Stat, had a happy ending after all.

He returned to his village, Kampung Bijuray Mongag, 15 km from here — safe and sound.

The search and rescue (SAR) operations ended today (Feb 11).

Bau district police chief DSP Poge Nyaon said today police were informed by the village chief that the victim managed to find his way out of the forest near Bung Kosa at 7.30pm yesterday.

“The victim found his way to the Salcra Pedaun residential area and sought help from workers there to send him back to Kampung Bijuray Mongag.

“The victim has undergone a medical examination at Bau Hospital and was given treatment for minor injuries to the legs and has returned home in a stable and safe condition,” he said.

On Feb 3, the victim and a friend had gone fishing at Sungai Stat.

While on his way home after the fishing trip, the friend did not realise the victim was missing as he thought the victim had returned home.

The police chief said the villagers searched for the victim for two days on Feb 4 and 5 but only managed to find the victim’s motorcycle.

The victim’s brother only lodged a police report on Feb 6, four days after the incident.

“We only launched the SAR operation on Feb 6,” DSP Poge said.
