BELAGA: A local man reported missing after a fishing trip with friends turned tragic on Friday (Mar 10), was found dead on Monday (Mar 13) not far from where he allegedly drowned.

The 29-year-old victim identified Leonard Siki Anthony Wini, was found floating along Sungai Peliran Murum around 6.30 pm.

A spokesman from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said rescuers retrieved the body, which was about 300 metres from where his boat was found.

The body was then handed over to the police for transportation service to the hospital.

Following the discovery, the search and rescue (SAR) operation was called off at 9 pm.

Last Friday, Leonard went out on a fishing trip with seven of his friends along the river.

At around 5 pm, his friends realised that the victim had not return from casting his nets.

They went out to look for the victim along the river but only found the boat he used. The authorities were quickly alerted for search assistance.

Firemen from Belaga station along with the police were deployed to the scene, about 180km from town.
