MIRI: An elderly man from Permyjaya was arrested by police yesterday morning after defying police directive to abide by the movement control order (MCO).

Miri Police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah confirmed the arrest.

According to Lim, the 59-year-old man was detained around 8.45am yesterday by a team of policemen on patrol at a riverbank near Kampung Pulau Melayu here.

“The suspect, a fishing enthusiast, had gone to the area and when the policemen advised him to go home, he just ignored them,” he said.

“The policemen repeatedly advised the suspect to go home after they spotted him loitering by the riverbank,” said ACP Lim.

When the suspect continued ignoring the advice, the police decided to arrest him.

Police seized his fishing gears, and the case is being investigated under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within the local infected areas) Regulation 2020 which provides for a maximum fine of RM1,000 or jailed up to six months or both.
