KUCHING: The Kuching District Police Headquarters (IPD Kuching) detained a man within 24 hours after he broke into a residence on Jalan Kedandi Tabuan Jaya here last Tuesday.

Kuching District Police Chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah, said the 42-year-old suspect was arrested at a house on Jalan Urat Mata here last Wednesday.

“The success of this arrest is related to a housebreaking case on Jalan Kedandi Tabuan Jaya on June 11, 2024, with losses amounting to approximately RM25,200,” he said at a press conference held at IPD Kuching today (June 14).

Ahsmon added that various jewellery items and two gold bars weighing five grammes each, along with one gold bar weighing 10 grammes reported missing in connection with this case, were also seized.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect has three prior records involving drug-related crimes and violence.

“The suspect is currently remanded, and we are proposing to the Court that the suspect be charged under Section 457, which provides for a prison sentence of up to 14 years and a fine,” he said.

In a separate case, Ahsmon stated that his team also successfully detained three local men aged between 28 and 36, believed to have stolen two brass cannon ornaments from a hotel on Persiaran Ban Hock here on June 5.

He said the three suspects were arrested at different locations, namely on Jalan Penrissen Kota Sentosa, Jalan Kuching Serian, and Jalan Astana Kuching on June 9.

“Also seized were the two brass cannon ornaments and a car used during the theft, which resulted in losses of approximately RM2,000,” he said.

Ahsmon noted that urine tests showed all suspects tested positive for amp/meth-type drugs, and all suspects have prior records involving drug-related crimes and violence, with a minimum of two cases and a maximum of 10 cases.

All suspects are currently remanded and will be charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to seven years, a fine, or both, upon conviction.

“We also urge the public to provide any information related to crimes by contacting the IPD Kuching control centre at 082-244444 or by reporting information to the nearest police station,” he said.

The stolen jewellery and gold with an air tag which the burglar thought is also valuable goods.
