KUCHING: A 35-year-old man was fined RM2,500 and jailed for one day by the Magistrates’ Court here on today (April 6) for stealing construction materials.

Mohd Hazman Sabu pleaded guilty to a charge read out by an interpreter in front of Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.

Based on the facts of the case, he committed the offence at a construction site in Taman Supreme around 3am, last Sunday (April 2).

If convicted, the accused can be charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a 10-year prison term and a fine.

Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura ordered the accused to be imprisoned for two months if the accused failed to pay the fine.

According to the facts of the case, the complainant, who works as a security guard together with his colleague, saw the accused attempting to open a store where the construction materials were placed.

The complainant and his colleague confronted the man, who attempted to flee.
