KUCHING: A 67-year-old fishmonger not only lost more than RM40,000 worth of properties including cash and gold, but his car was also used as a getaway in broad daylight in a break-in on Saturday, said Bau police chief DSP Poge Nyaon.

Poge said the victim returned home from work at 2pm to find his house at Taman Siniawan Villa, Bau broken into.

Thieves broke the fence and front entrance door to gain entry while taking their time to ransack the house.

It was believed that they have monitored the house and knew the time the house owner would return.

He added that burglars in Bau are now targeting homes that are empty during the day and break into their house to steal as recently, there has been a slight increase in house break-ins and theft.

Stolen were a black Citroen Naza vehicle with the plate number “QRG 5038”, some cash, two gold bracelets, two gold necklaces, and one pair of gold earrings. Also missing were the victim and his wife’s personal and bank documents.

Poge said the case is classified under Section 457 of the Penal code and if convicted, can be punishable for a maximum of 14 years imprisonment or whipping or fine.

Asking members of the public to ensure that their houses are securely locked before they going out, Poge said with extra locks, the burglars will have more difficulty in breaking into the house.

He said it is also better to install alarms and to set up a neighbourhood watch committee so that they can alert each other and the police if they see suspicious characters loitering around.
