Man remanded for allegedly causing mischief by fire

MIRI: A 53-year-old man was remanded for two days by the Magistrate’s Court Tuesday for allegedly setting fire to his neighbour’s house in Luak here on Sunday.

The remand order was meted out by Magistrate Md Syafique Md Hilmie.

The accused, however denied the allegations.

Initially, police applied for a four-day remand.

The accused told the court that he was suffering from thyroid and needed medication for his illness.

He was detained by police on April 15 at 3.40pm following a report lodged by his neighbour over the incident.

According to the fact of the case, on April 14 between 1am and 3am, the accused was allegedly hurling items believed to be firecrackers into the complainant’s house compound.

The explosions shocked the 53-year-old complainant and his family members.

When the complainant woke up following the explosions, he saw the accused wandering in front of his house seemingly in a state of anger.

The accused will be produced in court again today.

The case is being investigated under Section 436 of the Penal Code for causing mischief by fire.
