Man suspected of sexual assault arrested in Batu Niah plantation

SRI AMAN: Police have picked up a 38-year-old man suspected of sexual assault on a six-year-old girl in Kampung Kubal, Betong two weeks ago.

Sri Aman OCPD DSP Mathew Manggie confirmed that the arrest was made around 5.40 pm at a Batu Niah oil palm plantation in Miri last Friday (Apr 19).

He said the suspect is being remanded for five days until Apr 25 to facilitate investigations.

“We have been hunting the suspect after receiving a report around 6.40 pm on Apr 10, regarding the incident that occurred at an old cemetery.

“The case is being investigated under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries an imprisonment of up to 20 years and caning,” he said in a statement.

In light of this, Mathew advised the public to be more aware and watchful for any signs of child sexual abuse and if not addressed promptly, the victims may suffer serious emotional and mental harm.

He also urged people to report any information they may have about child sexual offences, saying that failure to do so, could lead to fines of up to RM5,000 under Section 19 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
