Man with mental disorder held for alleged vandalism of graves in Sibu

SIBU: A 49-year old man has been arrested for reportedly vandalising and causing damage to 11 graves at the Al-Qadim Islamic Cemetery in Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, here.

Sibu district police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the suspect was arrested around 1pm yesterday (Dec 29).

He said the arrest was made after a 39-year old man lodged a police report on Dec 24.

Zulkipli said the suspect has a history of mental illness, adding police will submit the investigation papers to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.

“The suspect has been transferred to a psychiatric ward in Sibu Hospital for observation and treatment,” he said in a statement.

The case is being investigated under Section 297 of the Penal Code.

Zulkipli has urged the public not to speculate on the case and appealed to those information to get in touch with investigating officer Inspector Ahmad Hakimi Abd Azid at 011-31873715.
