Man, woman missing after car plunges into river

SIBU: A man and a woman were reported missing, while another man survived after the car they were riding in plunged into the river at the Tanjung Kunyit ferry pier, Sungai Maaw here early this morning.

Sibu district police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the incident was reported at about 2.03 am and a search and rescue (SAR) operation involving the police, the State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and the Civil Defence Force had been activated.

“The first victim, a 38-year-old man, was found at 7.30 am and was taken to Sibu Hospital and the victim’s condition is stable while the search for the other two victims is still ongoing,” he said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, the Bomba operations centre said one of the two victims who are still missing has been identified as Philip Yiin Chung Leong, 61, while the identity of the missing woman has yet to be confirmed.

The statement said five rescuers from the Sibu Central Fire and Rescue Station were despatched to the location to participate in the SAR operation.

“The search was carried out by boarding a boat and assisted by four members of the Marine Police in another boat to conduct a water surface search,” it added.

As at press time two missing persons have not been found and the SAR operation was still ongoing.
