SIBU: High tide coupled with heavy downpour caused many low-lying areas here to be hit by floods yesterday.
The affected areas were Jalan Kong Yit Khim, Jalan Hulu Lanang, Jalan Lanang, Jalan Brooke Drive, Jalan Khoo Peng Loong, Jalan Oya, several stretches of Jalan Kampung Nyabor, Jalan Apollo and Jalan Ling Kai Cheng.
The roads in the areas were reported to be submerged by rising flood waters as high as 0.5 metre to two metres. The worst hit was Jalan Kong Yit Khim where the water level was 0.8 metres to 1.5 metres high. The road was accessible only to heavy vehicles.
Fortunately, so far no human casualty has been reported.
Sibu Zone fire chief Janggan Muling, when contacted, said a team of fire fighters had been deployed to monitor the flood situation in the town.
“Based on reports by our patrol team, the floods were due to the high tide coupled with heavy downpour. Our team have been directed to be on the alert in case the situation worsens,” he added.
