KUCHING: Many Chinese in Sarawak are unaware of the micro loans provided by the federal government, said Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Deputy Minister Chong Chieng Jen.
He said the federal government this year allocated RM100 million for micro loans under Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) throughout Malaysia.
“This micro-loan assistance is specially for non-Bumiputeras and they can apply for up to RM50,000.
“However, not many non-Bumiputeras in Sarawak are aware of or are applying for it due to lack of awareness,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters after the launch of a ‘Hari Bertemu Pelanggan’ (Customers’ Day) programme organised by the Ministry of Finance (MOF) at the Sultan Iskandar Building here yesterday.
Chong urged the Chinese community in the state to grab the opportunity provided by the federal government to develop their businesses.
“We often hear that traders in Peninsular Malaysia received the benefits but rarely in Sarawak.
“Therefore, hopefully with today’s programme for example, the public is aware of the assistance provided by the government,” he added.
