MIRI:  Many motorists who tried to enter the city centre yesterday were turned away by the police manning roadblocks carried out during the fourth day of the Movement Control Order (MCO).

Despite the MCO announced earlier this week by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the country, Mirians seem to turn a deaf ear as dozens of vehicles were spotted queuing up along the Pujut 4 on Saturday morning.

The motorists were trying to go to the city centre despite being told that the county was currently implementing the MCO and they were not allowed to leave home until March 31.

Miri Deputy police Chief Supt Mohd Sabri Zainol.

“Going to market to buy some groceries, to pay essential bills, or to the banks, were among common excuses we heard from motorists,” said Miri deputy police Chief Supt Mohd Sabri Zainol when met on Saturday at Pujut 4 here.

He pointed out that the people should discard the ‘don’t care’ attitude in order to ensure that the MCO would succeed in curbing the spread of Covid-19.

Miri police set up three roadblocks as part of their effort to minimise people movement.

“Besides Pujut 4, the other roadblocks are at Batu Niah and Bekenu,” said Mohd Sabri.

Military personnel will help the police to man the roadblocks from today.
