KUCHING: MP for Stampin, Julian Tan calls on the police force to urgently address the growing number of drug related activities which have infiltrated into schools involving school students.
He calls for more stringent enforcement by the authorities to curb such activities especially when it involves school children.
Tan said he had received multiple complaints from parents who are concerned for their children in school and whether such negative influence will affect their children. Drug is one of the major social problems faced by the people in our country and its number is growing here in Sarawak.
“Drugs activities are a serious thing especially if it has infiltrated into schools. It is like a poison that can jeopardise the future of our children. The authorities and law enforcement agencies should view the issue seriously and increase proper enforcement before it get worst.
“I brought the issue up in Parliament and Datuk Nur Jazlan, the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs has responded positively to the issue and asked for further information to properly address the issue.
“I have thus collected all the relevant information and submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs, including the schools that are involved as well as the different hot areas for drug activities.
The ‘Agensi Anti-Dadah Kebangsaan’ under the Ministry of Home Affairs even confirmed and certified the information given as some students in Sarawak have been tested positive for these drugs. So they then commit to take the required action based on the information that was provided. I also want to encourage the different schools to cooperate with the relevant law enforcement agencies to raise greater awareness especially among the students about the dangers of drug and it effects towards their life, their families and also the country so that they will not fall victim to such dangerous activities.
Such awareness is important to prevent the growing numbers of drug activities in the state as this problem can lead to many other social problems including robbery and domestic violence, “ the MP urged.
