KOTA SAMARAHAN: Education, Science and Technological Research Minister Datuk Seri Michael Manyin Jawong believes that organising innovation design competitions will enhance student’s interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
He said the competition is part of Sarawak STEM Strategy (SSS) initiative which focuses to address six major areas in order to leverage student enrolment in STEM courses.
“SSS focuses on six key areas including STEM Promotion, Human Capital Development, Resource Development and Facilities, Student Development and Research Development,” he said when officiating the closing ceremony for Innovate Sarawak Design Competition 2019 at in Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) here today.
On the lack of student’s enrolment in STEM, Manyin said a strong action plan is needed to promote STEM.
“The performance of Sarawak students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) currently is still way below from satisfactory.
“Only about 22 per cent of our students opted for Science stream which is why our universities are experiencing problem in getting enough qualified candidates for science and technology-based course,” he said.
