KUCHING: The Kuching Marathon 2022 (KM2022) and the Miri Marathon 2022 (MM22) is finally back after a lapse of two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The much awaited international road races by many long-distance running enthusiasts around the country and the region, will first see the 7th edition of the KM2022 to be held at Padang Mardeka on Oct 2, while it will continue with the 5th edition of the MM22 which will be held at Taman Bulatan on Nov 6.

During the launching of the marathons at Baitulmakmur Building II, Petra Jaya yesterday (May 9), Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the launch of the marathon was another refreshing start for sports tourism.

“We are happy to see the organisers organising these events as we have now opened our borders with more flights for both domestic and international travel. International conferences and sports events will soon be coming to our shores,” he said.

He said he was looking forward to seeing runners not only from Sarawak, but also Brunei, Singapore and Malaya participating in the marathons.

“The organisers are targeting 10,000 participants across the four categories of the M22, and 7,000 participants for the three categories of the MM22,” he said.

KM2022 event director Liew Tang Chieh who spoke at the press conference, said in respect of the participants of the Kuching Marathon who registered in year 2020 of which the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19, about 2,483 registered participants would be brought forward for this year’s marathon.

Meanwhile, the KM2022 comprises four categories namely, the 42km full marathon, half marathon (21km), 10km, and 5km run. The MM22 comprises three categories – the 42km, 21km and 10km run.

Every runner will receive goodies bags as well finishing medals.

Runners can now do their online registration at www.marathonkuching.com and www.marathonmiri.com starting today.

Also present were Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts II (Creative Industry and Performing Arts) Datuk Snowdan Lawan, Toursim, Arts and Culture Ministry Permanent Secretary Hii Chang Kee, and Miri Marathon Association Yeo Hui Teck.
