CYBERJAYA: The first lithium ion battery factory will be set in Malaysia by the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and Internet-of-Things Institute (MARii) in collaboration with a public-listed company, says chief executive officer Datuk Madani Sahari.
He said Malaysia would become the hub for lithium ion batteries in the Asean region with the establishment of the factory, expected in 12 months.
Madani, however, said the listed company was currently undertaking a feasibility study and was in the midst of identifying if the factory should be located in Negeri Sembilan or Selangor.
“The battery is not only important for use in electric vehicles but also to store energy,” he said after presenting an overview of the ‘’Automotive Industry 2018 and Insights of the Automotive Industry and Technology Adoption in 2019, here yesterday.
Meanwhile, International Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Dr Ong Kian Ming said the automotive industry remained a catalyst in developing a Malaysian workforce that was adept in technology and high value processes, synonymous with the capabilities of the advanced nations of the world. – Bernama
