Marine training provider needs link with counterparts worldwide

SIBU: Pelita Mas Laut Sdn Bhd (PMSB) as a Marine Training Provider needs to liaise with other related academies throughout the world in an effort to promote and enhance its academic level to a higher level.

Assistant Minister of Housing, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the cooperation with other related academies is important  to face the challenges, needs and rapid changes in the maritime industry as well as the sophistication of today’s world.

“In the academy such like this, we should always liaise with those in the similar field to learn anything new in the marine industry,” he said.

He said this when officiating at the 15th Anniversary of Pelita Mas Laut Sdn Bhd held at Sibu Islamic Complex hall here on Friday.

According to Karim, who is also Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports, PMSB must look holistically about what should be improved in either on the module and academy training syllabus so that PMSB can grow even bigger.

“The course offered in PMSB is good and it is comprehensive, including on the handling the ship, hygiene, and so forth which is related to the shipping industries as well as oil and gas,” he said, adding that it would make the trainees of PMSB become marketable in the job market.

Karim also said that the government encourages the people, especially young people here to be seafarers as most of the industries are now spearheaded by foreigners.

“In addition, career as a seafarer nowadays, is able to provide lucrative income. Hence, those related academy, especially PMSB should foster interest among the young people towards the industry,” he said.

He also suggested that PMSB to liaise with other related agencies including Marine Department to see the need to organise short term course for the small boat owners.

“The implementation of these courses is to ensure their own safety, as well as to provide exposure and training to boat owners during emergencies at sea,” he said.

At the same function, Karim also witnessed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between Pelita Mas Laut Sdn Bhd and Sing Kiong Hock Dockyard Sdn Bhd.

Pelita Mas Laut Sdn Bhd was represented by its managing director, Masni Amit, while Sing Kiong Hock Dockyard Sdn Bhd, represented by its chairman, Dato Albert Ling Kiong Ping.

Karim also handed over appreciation awards to the government agencies and shipping companies, scholarships to the Deck and Engine trainees of the Pelita Mas Laut Sdn Bhd and Staff Awards 2017.

Balingian Assemblyman Abdul Yakub Arbi, political secretary to the Chief Minister Abu Seman Jahwie, Assistant Director of Examination and Certification of Seafarers Marine Headquarters Malaysia Captain Sukhbir Singh Gopal Singh, Assistant Director of Industrial Control-Malaysia Marine Department Sarawak Region Marzuki Brahim, and Pelita Mas Laut Sdn Bhd Group Director Hamimah Abun were among those present.
