SARATOK: Works to upgrade the Saratok public market by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) is expected to commence in April this year.
Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri said this is one of the important projects of the agency to benefit traders and the local community.
“The Saratok public market needs improvement, and we are grateful that FAMA Sarawak has agreed to upgrade the focal point.
“We were informed by its Sarawak director Ramli Mat Sani, who explained in detail about the project, that work will begin in April,” he said.
Mohamad Duri said this after a project meeting session with Krian assemblyman Friday Belik and related agencies in Saratok yesterday.
He said the objective of the project upgrade was to provide comfort to traders and visitors who buy fish, vegetables and other daily necessities.
He thanked FAMA Sarawak for the commitment shown, which also proves that the spirit of cooperation between federal and Sarawak agencies is important to develop rural infrastructure.
“I also hope that the Saratok District Council (MDS) can help manage the place to be more user-friendly in all aspects, especially for people with disabilities and the elderly.
“MDS, as the local authority responsible for facilities such as public markets, must prioritise comfort.
“This means that when the new-look Saratok public market is completed, it can attract more visitors, which in turn will enhance buying and selling activities,” he said.
He also emphasised cleanliness as a top priority.
“Cleanliness reflects one’s character. When our place is clean, people will feel comfortable coming to Saratok,” he said.
