KUCHING: Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing is expected to symbolically hand over oxygen tanks from Sarawak to West Kalimantan, Indonesia tomorrow.

According to a news report by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) on Monday, Masing will be representing Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg at the event.

The handing over ceremony is expected to take place at the Tebedu Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex.

On Monday the Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development permanent secretary Datuk Safri Zainudin went to inspect the site for the handing over ceremony.

Meanwhile, on July 22, Abang Johari said the Sarawak government would assist West Kalimantan by channelling oxygen supply to it following a shortage in the region.

He said the state government had received a request for help from West Kalimantan on the matter early last week.

“Masing is looking into it. It has to be a government-to-government effort.

“We will do what we have done before when they needed our help to supply gas to them. We will send the oxygen to the army at the border,” he said.

It was also reported that West Kalimantan faced a shortage of oxygen due to high Covid-19 cases in the Indonesian region.
