KUCHING: It is a good political suggestion that Sarawak and Sabah become one entity or region in Malaysia, says Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr James Masing.

However, he said this was easier said than done as MA63 states very clearly that Sarawak and Sabah are two separate regions in the Federation of Malaysia.

“If we want to combine Sarawak and Sabah into one entity, then MA63 needs to be revised, Parliament must agree to it and the two State Legislative Assemblies must endorse it.”

Masing was commenting on Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal’s call on all parties to support the government’s efforts to restore the status of Sabah and Sarawak  as one territory as stipulated in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

He said the matter was discussed with the Prime Minister during a recent MA63 meeting.

Shafie expressed confidence that the federal government would approve this because it had been enshrined in the constitution and did not require any vote.
