KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) will still play the role as an opposition party in governing the nation in manners which are spelt out in a democratic process. This was stated by PRS president, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing who is also Deputy Chief Minister during a press conference at PRS headquarters here, yesterday.

“We will expose any wrongdoings and irregularities in the administration, we will oppose them and we will propose solutions in ways that are beneficial to the people of Malaysia. “We will not oppose for the sake of opposing. In short, we will act as a responsible opposition. That is, we want to be an opposition that is credible and believable, so that when time for change comes, the people of Malaysia will, once again believe in us,” Masing said.

He also pointed out that he and a few PRS YBs and members had been in the opposition for seven years from 1987 to 1994. Hence, the role as an opposition is not new nor is it to some of the PRS members. “During the state election in 2016, the people of Sarawak had spoken. They wanted Barisan Nasional (BN) to administer Sarawak with a very loud and clear voice. They gave us two thirds majority in the DUN (State Legislative Assembly).

It is therefore, my hope that Pakatan Harapan (PH) understands its implications while administering the Federation of Malaysia. “At the federation level PH controls while at the state level BN administers. The understanding, the constitutional as well as the financial obligations of the Federation to the states within its jurisdiction must not get lost in the euphoria of winning a general election.

“Sarawak BN government will remind PH of its constitutional obligation to Sarawak and other states which choose not to join PH,” Masing pointed out.
