KUCHING: Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing supports the proposed travel ban on National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loan defaulters.
“The travel ban on PTPTN defaulters is a good decision. I hope the MoE (Ministry of Education) will carry through with such a decision,” he said.
Masing said if the defaulters could afford to go overseas they surely could afford to start repaying their PTPTN loan debts.
It would be unfair for them (defaulters) to not settle their educational debts as that would deprive others of the chance to be educated.
“It is not only morally wrong, but it is selfish. I agree with (Batang Sadong Member of Parliament) Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri that this is one way to force those gainfully employed to pay up their debts to society,” he added.
“In this case, the MoE has to be cruel to be kind so others can be educated!”
On Monday, Nancy said the travel ban had proven to be an effective measure in the past to encourage borrowers to repay their loan debts.
