MIRI: In their bid to prevent the police from checking their motorcycles, five illegal motorcycle racers (Mat Rempits) threw their machines into a ravine before fleeing into a nearby jungle at Canada Hill here yesterday.

However, their efforts were futile as the police managed to arrest all of them.

They were later found riding the motorcycles without a licence and a road tax.

State Traffic Investigation Department Acting head, ASP Mathew Manggi said a total of 39 motorcycles were confiscated in an operation codenamed ‘Ops Samseng Jalanan’ which began at 10.00pm on Saturday and ended at 3.00am yesterday.

He said the operation was conducted at Marina ParkCity, Dataran Kipas Miri and Canada Hill.

“A total of 116 summonses were issued to motorists for various traffic offences including driving without a licence, expired road tax and modified registration plates,” he said in a statement here.

Several ‘Mat Rempits’ arrested by the police.
