KUCHING: The access route to Matang Wildlife Centre was cut off after a landslide occurred in the area yesterday.
The incident occurred around 8am following non-stop downpour since midnight yesterday which resulted in mud and rock burying a portion of both lanes of the road.
State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Petra Jaya fire station chief Azaharul Sahari said firefighters were despatched to the scene after receiving a distress call at around 8.20am.
“No one was injured in the incident; a vehicle was stuck in the mud. It was later towed off to safety. The cut off route have also affected villagers of Kampung Rayu Melayu as it is the only access route to the village,” he said when met at the scene yesterday.
Two overhead cable poles were also affected as a result of the landslide.
The Works Department have deployed their machinery to the scene for clearing works. Cahya Mata Sarawak (CMS) and Sesco personnel were also present at the scene to assist in clearing the landslide debris and manning the affected overhead cable poles.
Meanwhile, Kampung Rayu Melayu village chief Awang Lapok Awang Dagang said three villages are situated in the area namely Kampung Rayu Melayu, Kampung Rayu Iban and Kampung Rayu Hujan Panas.
“This have affected the daily activities of the villagers whereby, some of them couldn’t go to work and carry out their business due to the incident,” he said.
