MATU: The proposed plan to redevelop the Matu District, particularly the Kuala Matu area, will be assessed after the development plan for Matu and Igan has been evaluated.
The Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has instructed the State Planning Authority (SPA) to prepare the plan after his working visit there on June 8, according to the Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Murshid Diraja Dr Juanda Jaya.
He said the erosion dam construction project is currently underway and the second phase will proceed after that.
The plan, he said, includes the implementation of the Rest and Service Area (RSA) in Kuala Matu.
“This is a framework to ensure that the Kuala Matu area becomes a focal point for tourists and a stopover when the coastal road is fully completed.
“In addition to the resort area provided in the Kuala Matu area, the construction project of the Kuala Matu Mosque together with the central zone observatory in Kuala Matu is also underway,” he said during a site visit to Kuala Matu for the preparation of the Kuala Matu Development Plan recently.
According to Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), Juanda said several shophouse areas and Village Expansion Scheme (SPK) areas were also included in the development plan.
“We propose around 200 units to ensure that the Kuala Matu area develops and becomes a new satellite town in the Matu District area.
“This is a continuous effort by the Sarawak government to ensure that rural areas also enjoy development like in other areas,” he added.
